I was here in the Botanic Garden at Calcutta 3 years ago. I had heard about it and when I was there, I was so thrilled to see the gigantic banyan tree with my own eyes. Calcutta is about 2000 kms from here. Many branches have been artificially supported. It is more than 250 years old. A good part of it was blown down by a storm in the '50s. Even now, the size is astounding. There is also a big 400-year old tree 150 kms from Mysore but I have not yet seen.

These are awesome trees. Several years ago DH and I saw one at a public garden south of here (can't remember which one!) We seriously discussed planting one in the woods on our property, but figured that it got too cold in this part of the state.
