hi everyone i got some veggie seed that need an inoculant before planting. what is that? rabies? parvo? lol. no clue.
inoculant?
HAH! Funny! Sounds like you just rec'd some bean or pea seed. There are "legume inoculants" available for beans, peas, etc. You moisten your seeds and them roll them in the inoculant (a powder usually). This puts nitrogen-fixing bacteria on the seed to help them thrive in their new home by giving them an increased ability to draw nitrogen from the air quicker.
After you've grown legumes in your soil you can get by w/out using it if you choose.
Remember tho, there are certain inoculants for beans, others for peas. (Different strains for each.) Nowadays you will see a pack that says it's for both peas and beans. I don't care for them much...it is a mixture of several kinds of inoculants. If you are buying it specifically for beans why should you waste the $$ on having a pea inoculant in the same bag, which is useless to the beans? Also this tells me you are not only wasting the $$ by spending it on something you don't need but you are getting less inoculant for your beans.
Does that help any?
thank you. i have been trying to grow peas for a few seasons now. is that why i did not have any luck with them? duh... i am going to lowes tomorrow i will pick up the inoculant. so i guess it's better if i get one for peas and one for beans. i live in a farming town you would think they would carry this here.
Farmgirl, you can use the one for peas on the lupines and they will do better too, also sweet peas and Texas Blue Bonnets.
very good, thank you calalily, i will definitly try that. i'm scarig dh my list is getting longer by the minute. i just hope lowes has the stuff i need or it's another 50 miles to home depot.
I've never thought about how lucky we are living so close to all the super stores!! The only times I don't feel lucky are when we're trying to sell our plants, but I do love to shop there.
Farmgirl, if you can't find it locally, you might want to try some mailorder sources (let me know if you need help finding them.) Some of them have fairly reasonable shipping costs, and can be cheaper than the cost to travel 100 miles round trip for one item.
GoVols, that's a great idea too, or I could run over to Mayo's and get her some.(or the Farmer's Co-Op, they have it too)
thank you go-vols and calalily i will let you know after my adventure tomorrow. it is always and adventure leaving the farm. i do have a large list for lowes i hope they have everything i need. this is my favorite kind of shopping "garden" dh would not let me go alone he likes to try to keep a tight rein on my spending. lol i went to our towns walmart yesterday and good thing he was inside when i got home. i drove right over to my greenhouse and put everything away so he doesn't know what i bought. spring is here i don't care if it is still cold outside.
I just planted my sweet peas this morning and didn't use any, is there anyway I can help them along?
Shoe, whare are you?? TiG, I used the powder mixed with water last year and poured it over some of my seed trays. i don't know if that's how you are supposed to do it, but I figured it wouldn't hurt.
Where am I? I've been looking for myself for yrs!! (that's not a fair question to ask the likes of me!)
Heck, if that worked for you it oughtta work for everyone!
Farmgirl,
I can identify with You. When we go to town it is ususlly at least 1/2 a day affair.. gotta have lunch & all U know *G* I moved here from a larger city in VA to this small, small town. It is about 30 miles to a Lowes or W-M.. I have been here almost 2 years & love it though. I wouldn't want to go back to the city life.
