This is the first bloom I have had on this plant. For you that may not know Solandra Maxima is in the same family as Brugs. The flower gets darker each day and last up to a week. I also have this vine with the solid green leaves.
Solandra Maxima Variegated Picture
wow Gloria, it's gorgeous!! Mine is doing wonderfully, thank you again!
I have the un variegated one, can't wait for it to bloom, the bloom looks HUGE on yours!!!
Wow!! That is, as CC already said, One HUGE bloom. How tall is your plant? Does it really vine and how long will the runners get? Bet you can tell I'm thinking about this one as a new addition sometime soon.
S.
Really pretty plant. Very unusual.
Shirley,
Yes, this does vine....have some canes that are about 6-7 feet long....can't see them the way I took the picture. I tied two pieces of 50 lb fishing string to the top of the pot( punched a couple of holes in the top side of the pot) and then tied the other end to the rafters of the greenhouse and that's what it is growing up.
tiG....I think you have the solid green Solandra Maxima correct...I know Cala has the variegated.
I am going bring two small plants of the solid to the plant swap.
You sent me both Glory, but I let something happen to the solid:( When someone gets cuttings this spring or fall, I'll probably be asking for another.
Tig,
unless I write it down it's lost in this mind....remember I have CRC.
I thought it was CRS?Thats what I have!!!LOL
Since I lost my memory, it has to be one of the two that I'm suffering from.
Gloria, thanks for telling me about the vining. Now I have to wonder if it could be wound around a tall stake. I don't have my greenhouse heated in the winter and hate to get things growing and have to move them. It is a very pretty bloom.
Glory, aren't you glad I saw that bud and told you not to cut that plant back?? Thanks for sharing those with me. The green leaved one is doing great, the variegated one is "hanging on".
Gloria - what a beauty. Am I understanding correctly, is this plant going to be a vine?
My solid is growing like a weed. If it don't get warm enough at night soon it will be growing all over the family room. My variegated one is healthy but small not really growing. Never took cuttings of these. Anyone have any ideas. Maybe what I need to do is cut the growing one back some. Dee
Why can't i see the [icture...this happens in so many of these posts...am I doing something wrong...it says click image for enlarged view.......but there is nothing there for me to click on.........I feel left out :)
Suzy
Suzy, are you running a firewall? Nortons sometimes makes it where you can't see the pictures and you have to turn it off while at DG.
No, no firewalls I use MacAfee no Norton's....but I went to another post on tiny cuttings and that picture showed up.....but no others have:(
Cala,
You were so right about that bud...you have younger eyes. LOL
CC...I was trying to be nice with the CRS. LOL
Dee..before you cut it look into the end of the cane/vine and see if it looks like a bud forming inside....if CRS will let loose of me I'll take a picture tomorrow and show you where and what to look for. I just cut mine where it was naked of leaves and it grew new canes/vines.
Brugnanny...yes this is a vine and will do well in your neck of the woods...it's a tropical and can't take any freezing.
Lovely! I got two variegated ones from Logees last year and have them tied to fences, expect bloom this year. Purplish leaves are wonderful. There was a huge, stunning specimen at Strybing Bot Garden in SF I always admired. Vine gets very heavy so needs staking/tying.
Horticult7 (Marjory Harris)

Marjory,
You are very lucky that you can grow these vines outside year round....I have to bring mine into the greenhouse around November till March. I have to trim it back to be able to carry it from the deck to the greenhouse. Someday I will get brave and plant a small one in the ground just to test and see if it will return from the roots the next spring.
Mine rooted real easy,a trader from California sent me a cutting, she didn't know what it was but I rooted a few peices, finally got it identified on the ID page, she wants some of the rooted peices back ,she says she couldn't root it.If I can root it any one can.Its growing OK in the house,no blooms though.....
Hooray!!!! I can see the picture!!! :) :) Now I can see why you are all excited over this plant..it is beautiful.
Guess what? I knocked the bloom off the Solandra Maxima today with my big butt. I was working around the plant and before I knew it the flower was on the floor of the greenhouse....I guess I'll have to wait for the next flower to open. :0(
Glory, your luck sounds like mine. I had 3 seed pods on Jean Pasco and knocked one off with my big butt!! Oh well, at least it's got more buds now.
oh no..........the dreaded big butt syndrome. Listed as a number one cause of lost seed pods and beautiful flowers!!! Be careful, this disease is not easily avoided! Also be careful of letting other people in amongest your plants, you never know who is a carrier!
LOL TiG, and I was feeling bad that I hadn't mentioned that I didn't thing Glory had a big butt!! Oh no, it's contageous. The worst thing in a green house is a clumsy man!! Far worse than a big butt!! DH's favorite saying "Oh, did I break that?" Grrrrrrr.
Well, you guys got my day started right. :-) Just one thing wrong here......I don't want to talk about my big butt, so I'll just blame any leaf or flower drop on DH. Cala, Jim would say, "Well, you shouldn't have had it sitting there"....
Brugie, that's what DH says when I accuse him of breaking something. Can't say he has a big butt though, he barely has one!! Could be his tummy got in the way!! I do have a walkway down the middle that is pretty straight now and I "had" isles between the plants but needed to put smaller pots there, so you have to scoot things around to get to the plants.
Cala, my DH knocked the seedpod off my peach sanguinea and blamed it on the dogs. I've warned all of the construction guys not to go near my plants when they come in for lunch. Told them I'd go loony if they knocked the flowers or seed pods off. They think I'm loony anyway with all of these brugs and building a conservatory for the big ones. LOL
They will warn their friends not to go near that "crazy brug lady" LOL.
Hey,
Even the next door kids know better....When they do something to one of my plants even by accident they tell their Mom "Miss Gloria gonna be mad as us". I guess I'm the wicked witch of the South. LOL
Funny Gloria, you didn't look like a witch. Wasn't the Southern Witch the good one?
Hey wait a minute, that's my title. Just ask anyone where I work.
Glenda was the good witch,so Glendas nick name must be Gloria, she was the pretty one with the pretty dress and wanted to help send Dorthy home.So gloria,if I click my heels together can you make my brugs big and flowering?
Gloria,
Is there going to be a plant swap
here on the Mississippi Coast??
If so when & where?? Are yall
going to the Mississippi Garden &
Patio Show at the Orange Grove Community Center Feb. 23-24??
Thanks,
Honeybee
Bonnie
Honeybee,
I not sure of a Ms swap but you are welcome to go to the FL swap with us....we are just going for the day. There's going to be 4 of us going from here in two cars.
I didn't know about the patio show...we are looking for new patio furniture...guess I need to read the newspaper more.:)
Honeybee if you want to go, send me an email so I can add you to my list. That way you will get the details. Dee
OK you guys, If you happen to have an extra cutting of that vine put my name on it and toss it my way.I would love to trade for this. PS I didn`t say I wanted to be on your list because that could be the you know what list.
Just had to tell y'all that DH doesn't have the BB syndrome (Big Butt OR Big Belly LOL!), so I can send him into the greenhouse without worry! He's not called "Skinny Kenny" for nothing. Y'all know the Jack Spratt tale? That's us! ;-) When I drive his truck with the "Skinny Kenny's Firewood" signs on the side, people look at me like "Huh?", but he gets big smiles, thumbs up signs and peals of laughter. *GRIN*
Update:
The Gold Cup flower smells an awful lot like the Aurea Brug...like the Brug it put out it's aroma at night.
