I wonder how those oasis cubes work. Has anyone tried them? I experimented with regular floral oasis last year but didn't have much luck.

I mostly use the wal-mart seed trays that come with the dome. I tried Parks Starts lasy year for the first time and wasn't all that impressed. I was thinking about the seed starter kits at Gardner's supply. I'm so cheap... I hate to spend that much money for seed trays. I don't know where they can be found any cheaper tho.

At Lowe's you can get the Seed pellets (72ct.) and biodome kit for 6.96..........and no SH...

Hi Ho Hi Ho its off to Lowes I go!!! =]

Dori, here are a few mail order sources to look at for price comparisons - they're all in the Watchdog, and they carry the Oasis cubes, plus lots of other seed starting supplies:

Home Harvest
Hydro-Garden
77 Hydro

Another place to check may be your local Co-Op. Ours carries the seed trays, cells and domes separately, for about the same price as these sources. Pay tax or shipping, it works out about the same.

Or, if you're on good terms with your greenhouse, try them for the cells and trays they throw away. A little diluted bleach to clean them good, and you're in business.

The Aps trays from Gardener's Supply is what I have used for years and they are great but then I get an employee discount. If you can find the same plant starting system somewhere for less it is worth while as this system works great.

Dori, Walmart sells the 72 for $5.88, however, the half-size that uses the regular size pellets are better at Lowes. Brenda

Dori, one other place I think you might be interested in checking out: Midwest Hydroponic Supplies is in Michigan and sells supplies online and in a retail store: http://gardenwatchdog.com/c/1702/

Hi there. i use oasis grow cubes all the time, and have
great success with them. now, i have to buy them by the case, expensive, but they last forever that way.
I would approach a greenhouse in your neighbourhood to find out if they would sell you a sheet or two.
keep the cutting in the top half of the cube by the way.
also, -geraniums don't like them much.

Hello everyone, I went around to about 3 nursery's that I frequently shop at and asked for all of their old flats and 6 packs. I gottem and a ton of 4 inch pots that were in great shape. Gonna do the same again this year, becuz I''m planting more stuff and I need more. Try it, you'd be suprised at what all they throw away! I cleaned all of them w/bleach and water, and they did just fine.

Thanks,
Traci S

For the 1st transplanting into we use 8 oz styrofoam cups with holes punched in them of course. They work for us..85 for $1.. 16 oz is more (less cups) but not sure how many.

A kitty-litter tray will hold several six-packs or 4" pots, and plastic wrap stretched across the top becomes at humidity dome.

why spend money on pot! am sure most of u drink soda from 2 liter or smaller plastic containers. i gather all the plastic soda pop containers my neighbors save for me. cut the top off and drill the bottom part, and u got ur pots. i even use the 8 oz. gatorade plastic container. after it is cut, it is just about the size of a 4" pot. i do not worry about their looks cause i plant seedlings in them. eventually those seedlings will be planted in the garden after they are hardened or aclimated to outside temperature.

the big 2 liter soda bottle i cut in half, save the top to create a cloche [sp?] effect. instant and cheaper way to get the mini green house. so as not to consume too much potting soil, i use those peanut styro foam at the bottom - eliminate excess water too.

for bigger pots, Home Depot have those black pots in numerous sizes that are cheaper in price too. 5 gal. pots are $2.19 each. better yet, u get them for almost free if not free from local nursery in ur neighborhood.

next time u go to Home Depot or Walmart and see some broken bag of potting soil, or bulk sizes of perlite or vermiculite, be sure to speak to the store or garden manager, u will be surprise the mark down price they will give u. one time i paid $1.50 for 4 cu.ft potting soil. the bag was broken but hardly anything was spilled. check around and u will be surprise how much bargain u get by being observative as u shop. i am not being cheap... just frugal!

I guess I'm frugal too MaVie. I have tons of 6 packs from over the years that I have saved along with dozens of 4 and 6 inch pots. I also bought a boatload of styrofoam cups at the dollar store a couple years ago. I just wash them in a bleach solution. They are still holding up ok. I also save tons of containers, meat, produce, etc. to plant in. Also, went to a community dinner once where they served baked spagetti in HUGE aluminum pans. As each pan was emptied, they threw them in the trash. As they threw them in the trash, I was stacking them up. Brought them home, lined them in the driveway, added ammonia and dw liquid. Sprayed them full of water and let them sit overnight and now have tons of those. I usually set my styrofoam cups in them. I save all my butter bowls too.
