Miniature corn questions

College Park, MD

This year I'm growing miniature Indian corn, miniature blue popcorn, and strawberry popcorn (for the first time). I'm planning on growing them with pumpkins. Here are my questions:

1.Miniature blue popcorn is a very strong pollinator. I read that you can grow two (or more)varieties close together without cross pollination by staggering planting dates. Is two weeks enough time between plantings, or do I need to allow more time?

2. Miniature corn is smaller than regular corn. What spacing do I need to use between plants and between rows?

3. I'm planning to plant in this pattern:
(x=cornstalk, o=pumpkin vine)

x x x o x x x x o x x x

x x x o x x x x o x x x

Is this layout practical? Or is there a better way?

Any information would be appreciated.
Thanks,
John

You may be disappointed with the interplanting of mini corn and pumpkins. The pumpkins will probably overwhelm the
corn. I grow both and the mini can not stand any competition. I plant the blue, pink and mixed colors only a few feet apart and have not had any problem. If you were to save the seed for replanting next year, you might have unusual and not true to type ears.
I space the mini corn about 8 inches apart in the row and the pumpkins are spaced 8 feet x 8 feet for Aspen and Appalachian , 12 feet x 12 feet for Cinderella and 4 x 8 for sugar pumpkins. The mini pumpkins can be spaced 1.5 x 8.
Good Luck!
