zone 7 poppies

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

When to plant??? I grew them years ago, but started them in January for spring blooms. I noticed that poppysue had them blooming at the end of summer. I think they'd be lovely in spring while I'm getting everything else going. Plant now or later???????/

TiG, annual or Oriental poppies? I sow the annual ones now along with larkspur for blooms around the time the iris's are blooming.

anything else you're starting outside now? sweetpeas and snapdragons, when do I start those. Yes, 90% of the poppies I have are annuals.

Westbrook, ME(Zone 5a)

I plant them when the ground is cold - and there are still night frost. April for me. Mine start blooming around the begining of July.

tiG - Any of the hardy re-seeding type annuals you could plant now. Nigella, sweet alyssum, catchfly, Cal. poppies, candytuft, bachelor's buttons, toadflax, annual phlox, clarkia....

I have to start snaps early here ... they take a while for blooms. I'd imagine you'd be able to direct sow them though.

poppy, I read the packages of sweet peas at the store today (annuals, but I have both) It says plant Dec-Feb in my zone, but then it says to start indoors early. Well!!!!!!! ack, I don't understand, I thought you could straight sow sweet peas?? which is it?

Westbrook, ME(Zone 5a)

I'd plant the annual sweet peas direct in the ground. Soak the seeds overnight first. There's not a big advantage to starting the perennial sweet pea early ... it won't do too much the first year. The second year is when it really starts to climb and flower well. They have a long tap root so you should move them when they're small or plant them where they'll stay.

thanks poppy!!! I can't wait for spring!!!!!!!!!!! all the glorious things I've never had before.....oh come on old man winter, go to sleep.

if I start my poppies now, when will they be through? I love them, and have soooooo many seeds, but I'm planning to have something else come up after them. I know when I grew them before, they were pretty much done by May or June, but did I have seeds then? I hate to not have the seeds, and I want something blooming all the time. Guess my real question is just how wild do I get with these seeds? I have enough to do my whole yard, which is pretty big.

Westbrook, ME(Zone 5a)

It takes a while for the seeds to mature after they're done flowering. I pull a lot of them right out after they're done... and I just save a few to collect the seeds from. They produce so many seeds - a few plants will give you enough.

thank you poppy queen:) I'm so excited, first time I've really worked in the yard in a while, and I just came in to get my seeds and check Dave's

one more question, the list you gave above, are you meaning direct sowing now, or winter sowing, protected??

Westbrook, ME(Zone 5a)

Those can all be direct seeded in the garden. Most of them will re-seed too if you let them.

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

eyes, I spent most of the day weeding!! argh. Did get one bed of poppies done though, and if the rain doesn't get too hard, may put out some more in the morning.

Toadsuck, TX(Zone 7a)

I know tiG....it's cold today..44 degrees..but at least is's sunny .....so poppies are headed for the west side!
