How does everyone else start cuttings inside?

Fredericktown, OH

Hello!
I have been trying to start several cuttings inside - first year I have tried this, and so far- I am not having much luck!
Would appreciate any advise that you people might be able to give.
My cuttings are mainly perennials and roses...I have no problem when I start them outside, but as is- too cold right now!

Have you tried heating your soil? I use an $12 heating cable in the sand in which my rooting cell packs (or yogurt cups) sit. However, many perennials are hard to root this time of year because of the dormancy set by the temperatures and the progression from summer sun to winter sun.

Hello
I was trying to start them in a pot filled with peat moss, then setting them on top my old fashioned heater register..with a zip lock bag over top.

Well, that sounds pretty good--as long as the heat is not too much nor the air too dry. Is it forced air heat? a steam radiator? I think the forced air would dry the leaves far too much. Either could get your soil too hot (unless you've got radiators like my poor father has got!)

---K---,
I know this sounds silly but,i wasn't having luck either.Picked up an old fish aquarium at a yardsale for a buck.SMALL amount of H2o and using the heater that came w/it....so far so good.

i started roses which are beginneing to leaf out now(after 3 months) I cut off a couple of 6 inch tips. I put them in a glass of water. At first it looked pretty dismal as all the leaves turned brown and fell off. Now they are leafing out again and making roots.Soon I will put them in soil and wait till the snow stops in May to put them outdoors.

It definately is much harder to root things in the winter. Perhaps providing much longer light with a lamp would help to fool them into thinking it's summer. And yes, warming the soil can't hurt, if it's not too hot

I didn't know you could root roses in water! Thanks for the tip. I have some in an unheated garage with 24 hour lamp on them, planted in potting soil. . . I don't know if they are rooting or not. May try your water.
Thanks, Grits
