A month or so ago Prain had a posting about famous ancestors and through posting on that I discovered that roadrunner and I were related. Then she informed me of two more on Dave's that I would be related to, Ginlyn and Lizh.
So I have three new cousins on Dave's right? Wrong. Make that four. This gets to be almost unbelievable.
Back before Christmas Mystic sent me an email and asked for my address she wanted to send me a Christmas card. Well I only knew her as Mystic until I got the card. Of course her name and address were on the card. A couple of days ago I was contacted by someone on the internet wanted some information about one of my ancestors and I went to my Family Tree Maker and looked up the person and got the information for them. They also had about 10 other names they were researching. I decided I would see if any of the other names might be in my files. When I went to one of the names the next name in order was Mystics real name. Now her name is not a common name that you see all the time so it sort of rung a bell in my head and I looked that person up and she lived in Ky. the state that Mystic lives in. I sent Mystic an email and asked her about this person and the person she was married to and YOU WON'T BELIEVE THIS. She emailed me back that her BIL had given them this information at Christmas. Seems he has started doing some research on the family. They are one and the same. I am so thrilled to be related to all four of these ladies.
Now the moral of this story is 'If you want to be kin to GRC, Mystic, Roadrunner, Ginlyn and Lizh just send me a Christmas card next year. And if you want to be really kin send me a Christmas present next year.
What if Mystic hadn't sent me a card?
What if the person hadn't asked for information on my family member?
What if I hadn't decided to help this person out and look up the other names?
What if Mystics BIL hadn't given Mystic the names at Christmas?
It is really unbelievable to me.
YOU WON'T BELIEVE THIS
WoW. Folks,we now have the 'Redclay Gang'all here at Dave's Garden Corral.
By the way GRC, did you receive a Christmas card from me?

that is so kewl!!! ya'll are so luck
hey my family started in cleveland TN. maybe some wandered north to KY getting your card ready now!!!
That is just too incredible for words Jim - lucky you and lucky relatives to have you!! Wish you had found me sitting somewhere on that family tree!!!! Doesn't go as far back as Ireland does it???....lol!!
My sis has traced ours back to the 1300-lots of kewl historical people-We even have a castle-HUMME Castle-ok its just the outside wall!
lots of obanians and coppage-scottish line-any out there?
Dori - my DH is half Cherokee and half Scottish - will that do??
Georgiaredclay, there is a great deal of Serendipity in Genealogy...almost like the Ancestors are helping us discover them and our living relatives. Gee, wasn't it me who encouraged you to contact each other and compare notes in the first place??? Congratulations on your discoveries!!!
There are a couple of great books, "Psychic Roots" and "Psychic Roots II" which contain many such stories, fascinating reading.
John
ok louisa close enough! ;] cuz!
Hey Dori - my dad's family is Scottish - came in the early 1900s to this country. They were from Ayr.
I never cease to wonder at synchronicity!
GRC
That's truely amazing, your family seems to be ever growing.
There are a lot of people who can claim Irish and/or Scottish ancestory. The Welsh seem to have stayed closer to home or maybe people just don't want to admit to it ;). (Before any Welsh descendants get on my back I've got a great deal of Welsh blood in my veins. Music in the blood and poetry in the soul must have missed me though LOL)
Jim, that is pretty amazing. (I'm humming "It's a Small World" as I type. Annoying song once it gets in your head.)
BTW, my mom (Edens_Gardener) is also into genealogy. Jim, maybe you should send her an email; maybe you'll have better luck coaxing her into making her presence known around here than I have ;0) (Love ya mom! Mean it!!!) Who knows, by the time those two compare notes, we could find out that I'm related to Jim, too!!!
Hey there cuz! I have to agree it really is amazing.I think I found some mighty nice folks to be related too. CoCo I like the sound of that the Redclay Gang. lol
Hello, ya'll...Ma-Jo here, of the RED CLAY GANG. Since I am the oldest of these "kids", I guess that makes me the "Matriarch" of this gang. Cousin Jim...how did this new upstart show up in our tree? Was it through Ole Dan'l Boone, or one of his sisters? Since I had already adopted Mystic, then it pleases me very much to now claim kin to her openly!! Welcome to the family, Mystic, honey (don't forget to wear your hat out in the wind!)Jo-mom LOL
Hey Jim,do we get to claim Mystic too, or did she come to you by way of another side of ancestors? I'd be mighty proud to be her cuz also, and anyone else you can find for us on DG....Gin
Welcome Mystic, happy to find another cousin. Just don't let Jo get too Bossy. LOL Good work Georgiaredclay....
BOSSY, ME? Not me...I'm just so quiet and shy! JO, of the Redclay Gang!
Amazing discovery! I'm happy for the Gang that those links were found. I know how happy they are all feeling now.
That's great guys. It is always superp[ when you make a connection in geneology. I have been working on my familys for about 3 years now and have traced some all the way back to 1400's in england at this point.
Co Co I must have missed the card. LOL
Let's see Cleveland Tn. then to Ky. I'll see what I can find on that. Might be another cuz in Michigan.
Lousia, now Ireland is where they came from. (Really Denmark, because they were thrown out of Ireland)
John I do remember your encouragement and thanks for it. It really brought the kin folks in.
I think Darius emailed me once that she lived at one time in Meat Camp N.C. Now that might be another cuz also. A bunch of kin from there.
go vols I thought your Mother was just make believe. HEE HEE
I will email her and let her know what Dave's can do to help locate kin. We could use a few more cousins.
Hi Mystic, Jo, Ginlyn and Lizh. Mystic came in on the Boone side. I think the same connection as you girls.
Thanks Sis, Kathleen, Baa, Dinu and Janet. We know ya'll are proud for us.
Jim....you never did tell me if we were "kissin Cousins", or just plain cousins...and what is the differnece between the two anyhow??? LOL...Which ever it is, I'm glad to "claim" all of you!! Jo/RedClay Gang
Louisa, my mom's family is Irish and Cherokee. My dad's family is Welsh. We might be cousins. My hubby's family is French, that went to Scotland and then to America in the 1700's.
Kathleen, my father's side of the family came from the area near Loch Doon. There is a Doon Castle (ruins) and the Doon River which runs through Ayr. Local history says they went off to fight wars and didn't come home. Two other families in that area raised sheep and farmed and the Doon's provided protection in the castle in times of trouble. The other families were Finlass and Boag. Does any of this sound familiar?
(Whaaaaa.....! I wanna be related to somebody!!)
Wish I knew how ya'll look up geneology. It seems so time-consuming. Is there a special site someone can just type in their name and it hunts for you? Or type in your grandparents name or something?
Congrats on ya'lls new family members, sounds so cool!
Well Jim you mean to tell me if I had sent a present instead of a card I could have an inheritance. lol Hey Cuz Gin and Liz. Looks like I am from your side of the family too. Looks like from what my BIL found it dates back to England. Liz I will keep an eye on that Bossy Jo(mom). lol I would be proud to claim anybody here as long lost kin. But I am already kin to all of you. You are my DG family.
GRC that is a amazing story, I have been trying to find my father's family for years. Since my mother and step farther are dead it is very hard to get any information on him.
With a name like Jack Reed it is not easy, I'm not even sure of the spelling of the last name, so you really lucked up.

I'll bet if we hunt in my flock of ancestors,we could find a connection too.Mainly 'cause we've found so many..one of them just has to hit.
I'd like to compare notes GRC.We have the Clay family of KY.,the Bollings,Stith,Cocke,Faith,Hall,Jones...lots of other well known names. One of my ancestors was married to Jane Rolfe
(grandaughter of Pocahontas)
So many of them were from Virginia and North Carolina that they get pretty confusing.
Email me if you want and we'll compare notes.
Melody I copied those names and will have a look at the tree. The grandkids are here now and one is doing a project for school on National Arbor Day and has to use the computer. I'll email you over the weekend. I have some papers with information that I haven't entered on the computer yet and I'll be looking at that also.
Shoe, I have tried to find a site like you want, and once long ago, several crashes and computers ago, I was onto some, but can't seem to find them now. Every time I try to get information, I run smack up against where someone wants money, and my experience with paying for membership on these things is that they disappear after I send money. Probably just as well, as I think a lot of my relatives would just as soon I never found out certain things. If it makes you feel better, we can be cousins. With the size of family I have, and the way they scattered all over, we could probably prove it if we really worked at it. Now, do you want to be kin to the ones who seem sort of French but are said to be from Scotland, or would you prefer to be kin through the ones who are Indian and Irish according to them? I don't think it's anything but a rumor in our case anyway, since most of them couldn't write or spell and they just passed down stories the way they wanted it to be. Remember a song about I tell it like it oughta be? That's genealogy.
Here's a link to a site that you can use for free
http://www.ancestry.com/share/awt/main.htm
There are also message boards at family history.com
Got lots of North Carolina kin Shoe...maybe we're cousins!
I new this would bring some folks together but had no idea ,this is great.jack
That is so nice. I had the luck to have an aunt who was interested in geneology, so have a family tree, a book about Scottish ancestors ( Clough), complete with coat of arms-10 generations removed from King of Scotland--no need to bow or curtsy.; information about the Mayflower and the ability to belong to the D.A.R.--which would probably ruin the local society. I bet a lot of us have common ancestors. I have heard that the Morman Church has a lot of information on geneology. Maybe we are more than dg family!!
GRC since I can't find my dad's family I am just going to clam you as family, after all we are all family here lol.
Looks to me like that Dave better start thinking of a "Geneology Forum" LOL Jo
I too am searching my family tree, we are only recent immigrants to North America from England.
My dad once told me he had an uncle who went back as far as William the Conquerer - the uncle's father was so enraged to hear he was a Norman he tore up the family tree. So now I am trying to duplicate it back to 1066.
Here is a site for those of you who are of British stock
http://www.users.on.net/proformat/engnames.html
Aimee...thanks! Well, I'm "Scotch-Irish" and have Indian wantabe in me (Amer-Indian). Thanks for searching the sites, and for putting out the flag about the money sites that disappear.
Melody, I'm gonna check out your hyperlink..thanks to you as well! (Maybe I'm gonna be related to someone after all, eh?)
Actually, I've been told I'm related to Bufflo Bill (William Cody), so maybe I should start a search from there.
Another method to find kin is to do a search on the name. I just went to yahoo and typed in my grandfathers name and many sites came up. Any thing that any one has posted any where on the net will show up. A lot of informtaion can be found in the sites of the counties. One of the sites that came up on yahoo was Coffee Co. Tn.
Someone at one time posted here on Dave's that you could type in your user name in a search and it will take you to the postings here on Dave's. It's the same priniple in finding relations. If it has been posted it probable will turn up. A tip also would be if you have a relative with an unusual name use that name to do the search. Fewer sites will come up but more than likely it will be what you are looking for and not a lot of information that is useless to sort out.
One of my big wishes is I wish I had studied History a little more diligently when I was in school. All the history was made my our ancestors and some played a major part in the things that affect us now. It really is interseting to read about or find out about brothers or cousins fighting in the civil war against each other. Several members posted this week to Mark about the disturbance in Ireland. We aren't to far removed from incidents as these here in the States.
Mystic do you remember the inheritance I posted in photo forum. Let me know what part of the inheritance you want. I'll round it up for you.
Well wind you are sure welcome to be part of the family. I keep looking for the rich uncle with out any luck. Maybe with all of us looking we will have success.
gardendragon I just read that about Bikkie the bastard not long ago. I think I was doing research on my family. I'll have to check it out. Maybe another cousin on Dave's.
Marcia do you have an Amy Clough. LOL
