An old ship

Mysore, India(Zone 10a)

About six years ago when I had been to Cochin (a port city), I had the opportunity to visit an old ship DOULOS. This was built in 1914 (2 yrs after the Titanic) and the Guiness Book of Records recognized her as the 'oldest operating passenger ship in the world'. It has sailed under names like 'Medina', 'Roma', Franc C' till 1977. It was also used as a Coast Guard vessel during WW 2. It has been sailing since 1977 under the name of Doulos carrying Christian Missionaries and selling books around the world - she has visited >200 ports. It is a huge ship. Anybody heard of it?

No, I haven't...but it sounds like an intersting ship...lots of history! Jo

It seems that I recall a ship like this coming into portland, selling Religious books and carrying missionaries. nd I actually toured the ship, but don't recall them mentioning the history. I wonder if this was the same ship? or one similiar to it?

Here's a picture of the ship: http://www.maritimematters.com/doulos.html

It looks like the same one that was in Portland.
When I was growing up in Izmir, a port city in Turkey, there was a school ship that would come every year, it was so mysterious to me, a huge ship that carried what seemed to me like a thousand kids, I guess they must have been either jr. high or high school, and they would descend upon the city in droves, I can just picture them in my mind, girls in plaid skirts and navy sweaters, the wind whipping their hair...cameras slung round their necks. I always wanted to attend that school, I think it was a year program, and I think it was an English school. I never even spoke to them, isnt that a shame?
The ship was so magestic looking, it would only be in town for a day or two, there are other minor ports on the coast that are a lot richer in history and archeology. The ruins of Ephesus where Mary's house is (my daughter just got back from there and her only comment on Mary's house was that it was tiny..)among others
