Need some ideas

Gulfport, MS(Zone 8a)

about landscaping in my front yard. I want to add something by my long driveway; maybe just at the front by the road and maybe re do my flower beds in the front yard. The bed in my front yard is mostly shade {only half day sun in only half the bed} cause it is under a balcony on top and pretty much shades most of the bed, but part of it does get morning sun. What would be good?

Similar situation :: I'm going to redo my front yard (or really right in front of the house) with hostas. It's mostly shady and since I've started to explore the hosta forum here, I'm getting hooked. There are so many sizes and colors, I'm thinking of just mixing a whole bunch together.

Sounds like a good idea, tho I have never done hostas. I always think I have too much sun, but hostas should do well in mostly shade, right?

Hi Roz

Hostas with take some sun, and look very nice with Frens and Astibes.

I am working a bed now with them and I added Daffadils this fall, I think it will be very showly this year. And the Hostas will hide the daffadil foilage once they are done blooming.

I would also take a look at ajugas, my bronze variety multilpy quickly and make a lovely border along the sidewalk, no special needs and have not had problems with disease/insects.

Thanks, I'll sure put these ideas in my plans and look these plants up. This could be my answer. I really appreciate the feedback you three have given me. Gives me something to think about.... especially if these plants have worked for y'all. Thanks again for responding.

Hate to burst your Hosta bubble, but I'm sure I've read that hostas don't do well much father south than zone 7. They are basically northern plants - need the cold to rest. We have a large shady area along our drive too where nothing seems to do well, we just filled it in with Monkey Grass. There are other things of course that should do fine for you like caladiums and ferns.

Hey, Roz... Have you checked out the landscaping forum here at DG?

Roz,
I have Hostas growing in my yard....they don't get as big as our Norther friends Hostas but this one type does nicely. My Mom received these Hostas from someone in NY some 15 years ago. I don't know the name of them but you are more then welcome to a few and maybe you can find out their name. I'm sure Calalily can help you out with this since she raises Hostas.
