Got an idea, Dave!

Richmond Hill, GA(Zone 8b)

Dave, I was just wondering if you'd be interested in starting a propagation forum? I know that you and others already have a big interest in it and I sure would like to learn myself. What do you think? Is there enough interest?

LOL, Marsh! Speaking of olive oyl, do you know if you can propagate olive trees? Do you grow any olive trees yourself? One of my gardening wishes is to successfully grow an olive tree here in zone 8b. I found a place in CA that mail orders olive trees and I'm saving up my money to buy a couple. Those suckers aren't cheap and when you throw in shipping costs...YIKES!

Terri,

You can propagate year-old wood dipped in rooting hormone, rather slow but effective. I am growing several fruiting kinds and two kinds of fruitless. Of course at the turn of the 20th century this part of cal. was the world's leading producer of olive and olive oil. The original material was introduced by the Spanish and Mexican missionaries. The hills around here still have old stands of olive trees from the heydays, some having been burned to the ground several times by wildfires only to resprout. About 9 years a friend and I tried to start an organic olive oil business based on these abandoned trees but logistically too impractical.

Wow, Marsh! I'm sooooo happy to finally find someone that is growing olive trees!!! I was thinking about ordering Mission and Manzanillo. What do you think? What are you growing? :)

Terri,

Both are good bearers but the Manzanillo wants to be a bit more bushier in my experience. Fruits seem larger too.

Thanks Marsh! :)
