This spider is hanging out on our kitchen door outside. I'm thinking it is an orb weaver but I'm not 100% sure. What I'm most curious about are the boxing gloves on the front. What are they?

It's a male orb weaver in the genus Araneus. Males often wander away from their webs in search of potential mates.
