I have new gophers that have dug up almost all my iris rhizomes & stacked them in front of 2 hillside holes. I am leery of replanting for fear of just being dug up again...Is it safe to just store with no dirt in bucket in garage until March ?? Just want confirmation on this idea. thx
winterizing bearded iris
It's challenging to answer gardening/plant questions when posters don't share location. I am in N. Georgia and you are probably somewhere else in the world. That said, iris are heavy feeders & prefer to be planted anytime by Fall where I am. They need to acclimate, send out roots & feed before blooming. Not like bulbs.
I've dealt with moles, voles, shrews, mice, squirrels, rabbits, skunks, possums, deer & groundhogs. Groundhogs are the worst. You are maybe West. Try wrapping individual rhizomes in light weight chicken wire and plant ASAP.
Hi Maypop, thank you for the advice, & yes I am in the west, San Andreas CA to be exact.. I am in the mountains..& have been at my current location for 6 years, nothing like this has happened before this year.. have a great day
I wouldn't worry about iris where you are. Isn't your location supposed to fall into the Pacific any moment?
The only area that might fall into the Pacific is land on Pacific side of the San Andreas fault line.. or the bay area.. My town name has nothing to do with the fault line.. it is just a name, I am up in the old gold country near Sonora. Thank you for being concerned I was doomed lol
