Some years ago I bought a house that came with two mature lilac trees: one had the typical lilac color and fragrance, the other was a purple-red variety with an unusual and gorgeous fragrance that I fell in love with. I’ve been trying for years to figure out what it was so I could plant one at my new house. Possibly Charles Joly, Monge, or Agincourte Beauty. Since I’m not a fan of the “classic” lilac fragrance, I’ve been searching for any red-purple variety that’s described as NOT having the classic lilac fragrance. Any suggestions?
Purple lilac mystery
Of course it would be helpful to see pictures, but following the shades of red-violet you mention, it could also be Red-Pixie? I'm envious! It's work to grow Lilacs in Texas. My Lil Kim is 3 years old and hanging in there.
Preston hybrids have a different fragrance and some come in the red-violet colors. You might check those out.
