Hydroponic Christmas Trees?

Afternoon Forum,

New member. Have always enjoyed growing things indoors, especially during winter, gives me something to do when you can't do anything outside.
Have always enjoyed Christmas Trees, every year, pick up a new tree for the holidays. This year, decided on attempting growing Christmas Trees Hydroponically. I know it's too late for anything this year, focusing more on having seedlings for 2025.

Has anyone attempted Hydroponic Christmas Trees? Kind of wondering what to expect or am I wasting my time?

Thanks in advance.

It is possible to grow trees hydroponically and it would probably take some experimentation to find out what works best. I know that apple trees can be grown hydroponically, but don't really have any info on conifers .

Thank You for the feedback Melody,

Just so everyone has a better understanding of what I have to work with:

1) I repurposed my old AeroGarden, which surprising still functions.
2) I soaked Cook's Blue Fir seed for 24 hours in H2O w/ some H2O2 added.
3) I have 15 grow sponges w/seeds in the tray, in a Zip-Loc bag in the refrigerator for a 30 day cold stratification.
4) This step takes place on October 23, when the Tray of 15 start a 16hr ON / 8hr OFF cycle in the AeroGarden.

This sounds fascinating! I'm all about experimenting and this is a great project. Keep posting on this thread with images so we can see what is happening.

Thanks...I know the beginnings of anything may not be spectacular, however the end result tells the whole story!

Update: 10/23/2024

Cold stratification Ended.

Excellent!

Evening everyone,

Noticed a white fuzzy appearance forming on some of my grow sponges. If you trust a google search, it states that the white fuzzy on grow sponges is actual a "Healthy" bacteria?

Article also stated that you could wipe it off with a Q-Tip, apply a drop of Hydrogen Peroxide (H202) OR just leave it, and when the plant takes control of the pod the White fuzzy should stop.

Was wondering if anyone has experienced this? And how you dealt with it and what results you had.

Thanks for reading.

I've never experienced this, however it seems like the advice is good. The hydrogen peroxide will work and cinnamon is another anti fungal if you want to remove it.

It would most likely be a fungi, not bacteria, and requires no treatment.
