Could you please identify this? It was a cluster of green pods that were light weight, roundish, smooth skinned, and when cut open, there was pulp with a small brownish soft center. It was found at the edge of the woods in Macon county North Carolina. Found low growing on a skinny, woody branch/stem.

It's location at edge of woods would be appropriate for paw paws, and they grow in clusters. I've never seen so just a wild guess. Could it be - or a relative?
We have pawpaws. The fruit is much larger, oblong like a fat sausage & has large seeds.
