This big guy with a bad haircut was shot in North Texas zip code 75082. Threatening to predators? Feasting on a huge Texas thistle bloom at about 6 feet high

Really need to see a dorsal view of this insect - Appears to be a bee of some sort.

Thanks! Sorry, I was shooting over my head so couldn't get a dorsal view. A friend just sent me a "wet bumblebee" photo that looked like a good match.
