What spider is this? I don't recall ever seeing this oddly shaped creature.
CLOSED: Interesting spider
It's Micrathena gracilis, an orb weaver (Araneidae) commonly known as the spined micrathena or castleback orbweaver. They are commonly encountered in wooded areas; I once accidentally got one in my mouth when I walked through its web.
Thank you Flap! I looked her up and realized I had confused her front end with her back end. She had a lovely web going until I walked through it. It's that time of year.
