I will give Vicki the benefit of the doubt until proven otherwise. Hope she is only trying to inform us of the laws for our own protection. I think it is good to know the laws, at any rate. I don't believe in making trouble for others however.
Owen
Okay, who has Hofwil? That is the one brug that I really wanted from overseas. I can't say I've ever seen superrose. Sounds like it would be pretty. Heck, they are all pretty just some are prettier than others.
Owen, you are awfully level headed. i will edit my post. it's the irish in me......
Arlene, sorry I can't trade because I don't have superrose. I will eventually get Super Nova, but probably not until spring or summer. Wish I had a million dollars right now!!
Hey, nobody worry. For years I have torn the tag off my pillows even tho the message stated clearly that it was illegal to remove the tag. Just nobody smoke the brugs.

rofl, irish too funny!!!! i am hearing the tune "up against the wall you redneck mothers"
If we all end up in the pokie, who will water our brugs? Who will cook for my children? Who will pay my bail?? Oh such a dillema. Does anybody know if I could get in trouble for my passion vines too? Would having two things be a misdemeanor or felony?
they are not passiflora ,they are morning glories
my first thought was arlo guthries alices restaurant, the scene on bench W..oh no mothers rapers, father stabbers, oh no father rapers...i know that has NOTHING to do with the topic at hand.
guess when irish said up against the wall mother bruggers
I have been reading this forum some, trying to learn about brugs. I have my first and only four cuttings growing from TIG that are doing great. This reminds me of once I bought some purple poppy seeds on e-bay. About two months after I bought and planted them, I received a letter from some law enforcement division from Oregon saying it was illegal to grow them as they are the direct producers of Opium. I'm not into distilling opium and I love their color , so I hope the poppy police don't come and get me. lol. Lou
dispatcher, I will be glad to further your brug addiction come spring:) 4 isn't nearly enough!!!
Lou,
tiG is right. Four is just a drop in the bucket. I had 1 the first year, 3 the second, and 13 this year. For next year I already have or have ordered, over 40. Watch out. If tiG, Arlene, Glory, and others have their way with you, the forrest will begin. They are wonderful plants. I'm sure I'll have a few extras too. Would rather see you growing brugs than a FIELD full of poppies!!
Shirley
PS. I grow poppies too. However, I don't know if they are the same kind that you are growing. Pretty is pretty in my book.
Well, it seems that I picked the wrong time to come back, lol. I have been down with pneumonia for the past 2 weeks and came back to post that would scare the bejesus, but I like to think that I am a tough old bird, and the only way someone is going to come here and take my brugs away from me is if they shoot me first. In the spring, I'll have brugs to trade and I hope that some of you will still want them. I don't have papers on any of mine, of course, the only country besides the USA that I have brought or traded with is Canada, and I can't believe that it's wrong to grow such beautiful plants just because they came from other countries. This spring, I intend to just follow through on my earlier plans and order from Monika and Hodniks.
Jackie
p.s. hope everyone is have a great Christmas and Happy New Year.
honi, can you put a space in there so it will fix this?
Ah, I wondered what had happened.
Hmmmmmm I'm wondering what prompted this initial posting?????? Just getting back online after an absense and I'm catching up on the postings.
First, I'm in Canada and received cuttings without roots or soil from trades. The package was held by Canada Food and Drug Inspection BECAUSE there was NO RETURN ADDRESS on the package. They are doing that because of the ANTHRAX scare and a doctor in Hamilton received the ANTHRAX virus in his mail. They now halt anything that is:
1. Wrapped in an unusual fashion with excessive use of tape.
2. No return address from sender.
3. Unlabeled as to contents.
Now this package did have the contents labeled but without a return address. I received a notice to call regarding the package that was opened. I immediately knew who the package was from when I asked what the cancel on the stamp said in terms of the city.
I identified the contents as "brugmansia cuttings" and they said they would get back to me. Two days later the cuttings were delivered to me by courier. It appears that the Agricultural Dept. are doing their job so that's a good thing n'est pas? The cuttings came without a certificate even and still they were forwarded to me.
I'm sure that every state/province has different regulations regarding importing and exporting seeds and plants. The point that I wish to make is probably 90% of all our new introduction plants in Canada originated from the U.S.
Brugmansia and Datura are sold by a few large Canadian growers and for sure Brugmansia and Datura are not native to Canada. A very large scale reputable grower and supplier of seeds and plants just introduced some new brugs and they started them last year and the plants are now available for sale. Even T&M sells seeds distributed through Canadian venues.
The initial point made by 'said person' I hope was made in good faith and not as a hostile one. Brugs from Canada were intially from the U.S. or from Europe and are being grown and sold here and back to the US and perhaps Europe again. Plants sold to the U.S. are generally sent in peat moss.
SO IF YOU TRADE WITH SOMEONE FROM CANADA YOU ARE PROBABLY GETTING BACK A PLANT/CUTTING ETC. of U.S. origin, AND IF THE PLANTS ARE SENT WITH NO SOIL, CERTIFIED ETC. WHAT EXACTLY IS THE PROBLEM???? AND WHAT MAKES THEM SOOOOOOOO ILLEGAL??
My Canadian two cents worth and when its devalued against the U.S. dollar at a ratio of $1US/60cents Canadian I guess its worth even less.
Since I have just started growing these, I am not quite understanding all of this. Does this mean that you will no longer be able to trade and only buy from certain places if they have what you are looking for?? I really don't want to stop growing these beautiful plants. The few cuttings that I have received didn't come with any kind of papers. Were they supposed to have? I thought only animals came with papers. Really though, is this serious or over reaction to something or just some bantering. A little confused (ok alot) Dee
D,Don't worry about this.If you have not received anything from outside the country you are fine.Trading within US boundaries is perfectly legal. If you want to import plants,
they need the proper paperwork and must go through quarantine. And of course, you have NOT received anything from outside our borders.
One further observation.Trading across the Canadian border will never be stopped.Too many people live too close to the border.
Thanks gone2seed. I surely didn't want to stop. Dee
bump In case there are other people wondering about the import restrictions
Judy
On second thought this thread once I read it all the way through is just more confusing.
Sorry I bumped it.
Judy
Whoa, I'm kinda glad you did in a way Judy. I now know what went down before I became a member here. Thanks for posting it, I would have never found it. Course, I wasn't looking either LOL
