I had this buried between seven overgrown evergreen until I recently cleared them out.From what I was told by the previous owner it was planted in 1960.Depending on the lifespan of a cherry blossom tree,is it worth having it cut back.The tree is encroaching the landscape of my neighbor behind me and I thought if it was pruned it would extend the tree’s life.
"Cut back" sounds a bit indiscriminate when it comes to pruning an otherwise healthy old tree. I don't grow flowering cherries myself, and I'm not familiar with how long they will normally live.
I would suggest that you use a qualified certified arborist whose practice involves managing healthy trees for long life - not a company that normally just cuts down trees or does utility line clearing. For a tree like this, removal of dead wood, pruning out crossing/rubbing branches, and pruning for good air flow through the foliage (reduces foliar disease due to continuously wet leaf surfaces) ought to be the general target of your plant's health care.
I agree. Tree looks perfectly healthy, but needs pruning by someone who knows what he or she is doing.
