Please help me identify this weird looking spider

I live in the mid Michigan area and came home yesterday to see this spider on my garage outside. I have never seen one like it before and have googled hundreds of spiders yet haven't found anything on what it is. I'm hoping someone here can help me.

It's an orb weaver in the genus Araneus, but the image is not clear enough for me to hazard a more specific identification. There are at least three species that can have an appearance similar to your specimen; all orb weavers are harmless to humans.
