Hi! Listmates:
I recently started to use straws as mulch in the garden. After that I started to see bugs like this: less than 1/2 inch, yellow-brownish, no wings, with ring/segments in the abdomen and 4-5 brown/black stripes along its back. Google came back nothing. Could you help? Is this a pest or beneficial?
Thanks.

The image is not clear enough for me to be certain, but it resembles a three-lined cockroach, Luridiblatta trivittata - an introduced species. See https://essig.berkeley.edu/category/california/
If this not seem to match your specimens, please try to submit a more sharply focused image.

Thank you! It is indeed a three-lined cockroach. Not sure if it is a pest for the garden. Eating fallen leaves is OK to me but hopefully not eating anything else.
