Often found in the garden, but am unable to relate it to the butterflies that visit here. Which is this? It is on the Star Jasmine leaf here, has eaten buds.

Hi Dinu, hope you are well. I believe this may be the caterpillar of a moth rather than a butterfly. I have seen a similar photo, but it doesn't identify the species. I will see what else I can find.

16th picture of the moth is seen often in my garden. Wonder if the above caterpillar is of that.

The moth in the 16th image is in the family Geometridae; your caterpillar is in the family Lymantriidae.

The image I provided was intended simply as an example of the genus Euproctis and not a specific identification. My apologies if that was not clear.
Thus is the one I saw very recently in the garden.

That appears to be in the family Geometridae.
Hello, Dinu - An update on your caterpillar: It is in the Lymantriid genus Orvasca; several species in this genus previously had been placed in the genus Euproctis. See https://www.mothsofindia.org/sp/357853/Orvasca-subnotata for one of the species reported from India.
