Hope somebody can do it from photos. Hard to capture its beauty in a photo. Google says "old growth forest". Yes!!...but what tree? Leafsnap (Android app) (which also supposedly identifies bark) was no where near right in its suggestions. Diameter at base probably 2-3 yards or so. Live in Washington state. Let me know if you can tell what tree this is! Thanks!

From the look of that heavily furrowed bark and large simple leaves, it makes me think Cottonwood (Populus sp.), because the Ohio River valley region hosts Eastern Cottonwod (Populus deltoides) which looks just like that.
It appears that Washington hosts Black Cottonwood with similar characteristics; Populus balsamifera ssp. trichocarpa is likely what you are looking at.
