Found this guy in the garden a few days ago and he was very large, could probably fit in the palm of my hand, I’m located in Northern California any information is appreciated.

It's a sphinx moth (family Sphingidae) in the genus Smerinthus. There are several species that can appear quite similar, but based on your location, I believe that it most likely is S. ophthalmica.
