Black Walnut and Slender Silhouette Sweetgum

Wheaton, IL(Zone 5a)

Has anyone planted a Slender Silhouette Sweetgum near a black walnut tree? Morton's Arboretum lists sweetgum as juglone tolerant but I know that can vary with the different cultivars. Has anyone out there tried growing this one? Thanks for the help.

You typically are not going to have difficulty growing two native species near each other, when these two species grow in common plant communities naturally.

I wouldn't expect any variance of behavior from any Sweetgum clone in its tolerance of Black Walnut proximity. I would expect some intolerance from 'Slender Silhouette' to the invariably rude northern IL winters.

Have you experience in growing this clone that far north, for any extended period of time? This plant is from southern Tennessee, from the banks of the lake in Tim's Ford State Park outside Winchester TN. I was in the boat when Don Shadow collected scions from that original tree.

Morton Arboretum staff are great people. If you asked, I bet they'd answer your question with their experiences - which will be far more applicable to your site.

I wish you good luck with growing Sweetgum. I hope the heat island of Chicagoland and maybe a somewhat protected location will help in success. I doubt that Black Walnut will be your problem.
