I have a Burkwood viburnum and a young redbud that got zapped with near record breaking low temperatures here in Kansas (6b). I believe it got down near -20F, then stayed abnormally cold for over a week. Both plants show green on the scratch test, but the buds are still inactive.
The other redbud trees in my area are just finishing up blooming and putting out leaves; mine has done nothing. It’s a volunteer that came up in the exact spot I wanted, and it has super interesting structure, so I want to save it if I can.
The viburnum was in a pot and had some root damage as well. I pruned out the damage and repotted it into fresh soil in a protected full sun area. It looks dead, but a scratch test shows healthy vivid green.
I am really confused, but hopefully they’re building up roots and will still emerge.
Any advice? Words of encouragement?
Freeze damage, any hope?
Time is the only thing you can apply, at this point.
