What might this be?
Designer Fly
It's a true fruit fly (family Tephritidae); many species in this family have a similar wing pattern - see https://bdj.pensoft.net/showimg.php?filename=big_66384.jpg for another example. Several species in this family (such as the Mediterranean fruit fly) are very serious pests.
Flies in the family Drosophilidae (vinegar/pomace flies) often are called fruit flies as well - anyone who ever took a basic course in genetics would be familiar with this.
