Hi Everyone, I have never seen anything like this critter in Northern Illinois. My daughter in law posted these two pictures, it was on her deck, it does fly. Any ideas what it could be?

It's a robber fly (family Asilidae) in the genus Diogmites. See https://pbase.com/tmurray74/image/86573247 for an example. These are ambush predators on other small arthropods.
