First my apologies for the blurry picture. I think (hope anyway) there’s enough detail to determine what type of caterpillar this is. I found this curled up and the ants were bothering it so I picked it up and moved it onto some leaves. I’ve tried searching the net and cannot even find a picture of this one. It was roughly an inch long. There was just a single black stripe down the middle of its back.

It's not a caterpillar; it's a larva of an elm sawfly, Cimbex americana.
