Can anyone help identify this beetle? It was found today along the edge of a field in northeastern Pennsylvania.
CLOSED: Colorful beetle
Not a beetle; it's a nymph of a stink bug (Hemiptera/Heteroptera: Pentatomidae); namely Stiretrus anchorago, known as the anchor stink bug - https://www.inaturalist.org/taxa/261458-Stiretrus-anchorago/browse_photos
This is a predatory species, feeding on many other insects.
Thank you! That explains why we couldn't find it when searching for beetles.
Can you recommend a good insect guide for the Northeast?
I can definitely recommend the first two on this list - https://davyandtracy.com/garden/best-insect-field-guides-north-america/
They look perfect. Thank you again!
