Peonies

Sintaluta, Canada

I'm moving and want to take my peonies. I know suggested transplant time is fall but wonder will they survive a summer move?

They will probably not be happy, but I expect that they can survive.

I would make sure that they are well watered before you dig them, so that they have absorbed as much moisture as possible. I would tie up/bundle the stems/branching before digging, so that you minimize breakage when digging and transporting. Have a variety of ways to wrap/contain the rootball/root system, depending on how big that is. Dig as large a rootball as you can handle, to get the greatest amount of roots/underground plant parts. Be prepared to keep all of it moist, up to the point that you replant them.

If you show what your plants currently look like, additional advice might be given.

A year later, but thank you for this post. My mother in law is moving after 50 years in the same home. I want her peonies but this is such a bad time to move them. Will follow your advice Viburnum.

Good luck, LRobinson.

Grace us with some imagery, so that others may continue to learn. It would be great to see the in-place "before"; some examples of getting them out of the ground and bundled up; and finally replanting in their new home.

Then, in the future, success (hopefully) or not, show us how these Peonies performed.
