Hi
I am a newbie here.
I have some of my 2 year old apple trees that dried up from bottom to atleast 8 to 9 inches and that part did not have the outer bark cover. The part above that seemed good like a live tree, but did not have any leaves. Some branches had come up from below the ground and has new leaves on them, so the roots seem to be ok. When I cut the tree at the dried part, I could see the whole stem is dry and dead.
Any information as to what might cause this and how to prevent would be helpful. I have all the trees fenced in with wire to prevent deer damage. This is the second winter for those trees in ground.
Young Apple trees drying ?
Keep in mind that most apple trees are grafted , so what comes up from below the ground--if it comes from below the graft--could be an inferior type of tree. That happened with one we purchased, which was supposed to be 'Granny Smith.' We did keep the resulting tree because the fruits on it appeared to be an early and transparent apple, which does make good applesauce.
Almost any trees which are girdled ( have the bark removed all the way around the trunk) eventually will die above that point. But it isn't clear what caused that on your trees.
