We have an ornamental plum tree that always has all these shoots coming up from it. Not like the suckers that are all close to a tree trunk. These are farther away. We were wondering how to grow from these? If I try to dig them up there isn't really a root system and they don't live. Can this be done?
Tree Suckers
I did that with my Okame cherry tree. Dug up a root sucker from my plant for my parents and it grew into a good sized tree with blooms every year. Unfortunately, it hit upon bad times and was cut down to a stump but it has plenty of suckers if my mother wants a new cherry tree.
Here was my Okame cherries in lieu of the one at my mother's house (we rarely get there in winter).
UPDATE: The main tree isn't well and is mostly dead. We did let the suckers grow and they are doing really well! Of course they grew out farther than the original but still they are nice. I keep them trimmed and they even bloomed! I keep other suckers cut off.
They are root suckers, which some cherry trees have (like mine). As you've learned, they make new trees. If your tree is grafted, the new trees will be different from the old one.
Plum trees too.
