This is a long shot, but my parents’ security camera caught a flying insect the other night and we can’t for the life of us figure out what it is. They live in Burbank, CA, as well.
I apologize for the picture quality; they’re screen grabs of the camera’s night vision. But, I thought it was worth a try. Any ideas?
Mystery Bug Caught on Camera
Impossible to identify. If the flashes in these images were coming from the insect as opposed to being reflections from lighting in the area, it could be a firefly (Coleoptera: Lampyridae) of some kind. If this was the case, try to capture the insect with a net if you see it again and report it to the Entomology Research Museum at UC Riverside as fireflies are quite uncommon in southern California.
Thanks, Flapdoodle! We’re headed over to their place this evening, so I’ll keep my eyes peeled. I’ve never actually seen a firefly in real life before, so it would be pretty exciting if that’s what this was. Thanks again.
I can’t see the bug? Is it the lights?
