I guessed this is a bee sitting on a tomato leaf. Is it a bee? We've got petunias near by.. Is it a honey bee?
CLOSED: What kind of a bee is this?
This is a muscoid fly that has been attacked by an entomopathogenic fungus. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Entomophthora_muscae for an example.
Wow! Thanks.. So that's the reason why it's still there on the same leaf. What do you suggest I do, tear the leaf out and let it go or let it be on the plant. Does it harm the plant. Can I keep it in an area with fruit flies so the fruit flies cat h the fungus and stop spreading?
I'd read earlier it could be a fly that arrives before spring to feed on nectar.. but I can't seem to find much info about muscoid flies.. How can I know them better? Though there's just one around, I'm still curious to know.
It will not harm the plant in any way, so you may simply leave it be. 'Muscoid flies' comprise a very large group; house flies perhaps are the best known of them.
Thnx
