My Fall bulbs finally arrived, their delivery having been delayed so long that now the ground is frozen and I can't plant them. How can I store them and keep them viable until next Fall?
What should I do?
Store in a cool, dry place but that is not the best thing for them (been there, done that).
You can pot them up for forcing them to bloom early. Store the pots outdoors in a cold frame and insulate with wheat straw. Saw this on VG many years ago. Bring indoors when they are close to blooming and enjoy. Put back in the cold frame until spring thaw and then plant.
I frequently plant bulbs in November here in Pennsylvania--zone 5. In fact, I will have to do so this year, as my bulbs arrived late too. Although we've had a couple nights with temperatures below 32, the ground doesn't really freeze at this time of year here. Of course, things could be different where you are. But I'd wait until the next mild day and see if you can get your spade into that ground.
