Labeled as rhododendron. What’s going on with the leaves?

Got this large bonsai recently. The label said it was a rhododendron but I am unsure if it is or not. Noticed the top most leaves are brown, crisp, and some black stuff is on the surface of some green leaves. Any idea if this is a rhododendron and what is causing the leaves to look this way? Appreciate any help, thanks!
