Why did my new plants put on very little growth the first season???

Greenbrier, TN

I planted a large new flower bed in April full of shrubs, grasses and perennials. It seems like the only plants that put on any growth were the grasses and vines. Even my new hydrangea only put on an inch or so of new growth. I have nandinas and lorepatalums that didn’t budge at all. Can anyone offer any suggestion?

Zephyrhills, FL(Zone 9b)

Nandinas are notoriously slow growers, and 4-5 months isn't really enough time for any plant's roots to get established in a new location. Honestly, it sounds like you're just too anxious to see the results of your hard work. You know how time seems to pass painfully slow when you check your watch every 10 minutes? Well, gardening is the same way. I know this isn't what you want to hear, but the way you envisioned your garden will look after planting all those wonderful new plants probably won't start to take shape until the plants get into their second growing season (next spring). In my experience, year one is mostly about just eeping everything alive so it can get established enough to survive winter, then start looking good in the spring.
