I'm looking to plant 2 hedges. They can be of the same type but they have a few different purposes. Primarily both are to be used as a privacy hedge.
1) Planting strip between our fence and an apartment building. About 3.5 feet wide, facing south and would be exposed to sun all day. Ideally this hedge would be at least 9 feet high and very thick year round and grow somewhat fast.
2) The second hedge will be in our alley, which runs North and South. We are not allowed to plant trees in the alley but are allowed to plant certain plants and shrubs without a permit. From my understanding, if the shrub promotes bees or butterflies, then you do not need a permit. Currently there are wild blackberry bushes that I have to trim back about once a month or else they grow over and under our fence. We would also like this to be as tall and full as possible, it doesn't have to be as tall as the 1st hedge but at least 8 feet would be great.
We currently have one hummingbird (Anna's) that seems to live somewhere close by and stays here year round and we do see butterfly's come and go thru our backyard but we do not have anywhere for them visit. Also, we have a dog who likes to chase bees and wasps, so we are trying to avoid planting something that would bring a lot more of them around.
Sorry if this should have been posted in the Hummingbird and Butterfly forum. Thanks for any suggestions.
