Can someone please tell me what kind of insect this is? It flew away before I could get a better picture.

It's a robber fly (family Asilidae). They are ambush predators on other small arthropods, mainly other insects. See https://pbase.com/tmurray74/robber_flies_asilidae for some more examples.
