Hello, We hiked the other day and now 4 days later my dog, who previously had no bugs on him, has these tiny bugs all over him, as well as his bedding. At first I thought maybe he picked up a few fleas, but when squeezed between 2 fingernails, they pop and blood comes out. They are a bit more flat that perfectly round. They appear to have no legs yet when on the dog they are clearly moving, just VERY slowly. I was able to use a lint roller to get some from his bed.
To be clear, I have only seen these where he lays and on him. They are not burrowed, or clinging to him in any way. When he jumps up on my bed a few fall off. They are not jumping and do not have wings. It is not flea dirt. There appears to be two tiny antennae sticking out, but no head. The dog IS itching which is not the norm for him.
Thanks for any and all assistance!
Tiny round black bug on dog and where he lays
These most likely are blood-engorged tick larvae. When fully fed, they drop off their host to molt and then will seek out a new host. They do have legs; they are just hard to see when they are fully engorged.
