I'd like to know what this amazing creature morphed from. Some websites indicate that it's the tomato hornworm. Others identify its caterpillar stage as something else. Can you clear this up?

This is Hemaris diffinis, known as the snowberry clearwing. For an image of its caterpillar, see https://www.butterfliesandmoths.org/species/Hemaris-diffinis
Its background color can vary from pale green to brownish-purple.
