I found two of these in different areas of undisturbed ground in my rock garden and under my grape arbor, and I'm just hoping someone can help me identify the insect inside. The picture next to the Sharpie is there showing size. They are not very large but they are very hard - as if they were made purely of plastic

Unfortunately it seems I cannot close this thread because it has no replies so it is going to be abandoned but I did find out that these are moths

It's fine to just abandon a thread. Those pupas look enough different to suggest that they are different species. As you say, probably two different species of moths, although it is difficult to identify species at the pupa stage. In my mind, there are no "good" moths, since their larva feed on plants. Some are worse than others. You did a good job of photographing the pupas (pupae).
