This plant wasn't maintained by the prior home owner and the weight of snow snapped the trunk. Is it possible to rope the trunk back together and the plant will do ok? It looks a bit hardy surviving such a split.
Can this plant be saved?
At least half of it will survive. To maintain the shape of the plant (it's a Japanese maple) tie it together gradually, not all at once, otherwise you risk snapping off the living part. Make sure it gets enough water, otherwise leave it alone and see what happens. Let it grow the way it wants to. Part of it might die, but that's OK. I had the same thing happen years ago, and the plant is fine.
