Need Help with mulberry id

Amelia Court House, VA(Zone 7b)

Is this a red mulberry or an ornamental mulberry?

Leaf feels leathery overall, upper surface feels like velcro and leaf underside mostly smooth/very short hairs if at all but more noticeable on newer growth.

I haven't seen any berries on it so thinking either I have all males or it is not a fruit producing variety?

I seen another mulberry next to the bank but it was a black mulberry or had black fruits.

Key differences were leaves were softer/less rigid, leaves were a darker green and the hairs were very pronounced aka you could see them.

Only one image is going to be a challenge for anyone to absolutely identify that plant in that genus.

You would do better to supply more images of this plant, and also any others that you are not certain of their identity. Being able to compare/contrast images of your plants may make it much easier to say which is which.

The fruit color has nothing whatsoever to do with the identity. Fruit morphology can be used.

From that one image, I would lean toward Morus rubra. Let's see what else you've got.

Will do, will get some daytime shots and I hope that is what it is however where are the berries?

You mentioned that you are aware that Morus sp. generally have either all male or all female flowers.

Without seeing more of what you have there, there could be several different answers.

--Young plants may not have reached flowering age yet.

--You may have one or several male plants.

--You may have more than one species that do not overlap in bloom time.

Observation of the plants during their season of bloom will help answer those questions. Mulberry bloom season has passed for this year in your zone. Watch for plants with fruit on them, and mark them for observation next year so you can see for yourself what female flowers look like. Take pictures of flowers and post them for identification, if unknown flowering plants are found.

Yes, but you missed flowers and fruit again for this year.
