Holes in my flower bed

Johnson City, TN(Zone 6b)

Can someone please tell me what is causing these tiny holes in my flower bed? I am getting ready to redo this neglected bed but feared this might be caused by bees. Please advise. Thanks.

These are pits constructed by an insect called an antlion. The antlion lays in wait under the sand/dirt at the bottom of the pit for an ant or other small insect to blunder into the pit. It then attempts to seize the ant in its jaws and eat it. See https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QbqwVGmsoe0 for a short video.
