This Spring , the neighborhood was hit by a dense weed which I think may be Chickweed. I'm not interested in eating just eliminating. The root structure has formed a tightly-knit surface below the surface of the soil (no taproot.) I've read two different philosophies of weeding, not to turn to soil or bury the roots. We have a large yard, we're getting on in years, and I have MS. What I need to know is the best way and tools for weeding that are the least physically taxing. Is that even possible? I should add that I'm starting by covering as much as possible with black landscape plastic.

Sorry there's not a size reference, but you can, at least, see my wrist holding it, if not my hand. Small leaves.

You can use hori hori, hoe, knife, or weeder for removing weeds. Or else spray a weed-killer. If the weeds still exist.
Thank you. I am wary of the scattering seeds that seem to germinate overnight. If I spray it with an herbicide and cover it with tarp, will that kill the seeds as well?
You might be aware of Preen but if not it is worth looking into. Preen won't help get rid of weeds already there but can help keep weed seeds from germinating. I would spread it out twice a year, once just before spring and again before fall, our rainy season. It really helped!
