Weymouth, Dorset, United Kingdom(Zone 9a)

Hi everyone
I,m new to this site, and to computers, so it,s all a bit of a mystery to me. I,m trying to set up my page, but I,m getting confused as to what you put under each catagory, what,s the difference between, catagories, statuses, journel items? I need it explained to me in words ,step by step, I,m not thick (I don,t think :-} )just until I get this right I,m not gonna stop. Also, I listed a load of plants under a general heading, when I think I should have put them together under a catagory? Help????!!!! Hope someone out there will take pity on me,Any tips would be much appreciated, Cheers.

Hello sueone! You're braver than I am!!! I haven't even started doing anything to my page yet. Been here a few weeks. Todo is to do you're right.

Sueone-

First of all- a big welcome to Dave's Garden!!! The people are all friendly and helpful.

Don't worry about being a little confused, it took me a little while before I got the hang of the journal as well, and I'm Dave's wife!!!

My first suggestion is to look at some of the other member's journals- mine is not public, but many members are. To see public journals, click on the "journals" link on the right hand side of this page. This will show you a list of public journals. Everyone does theirs a little differently, so this will give you a great place to start getting ideas.

Next, feel free to email me personally:
trish@whitinger.net. I'm here all of the time, and will be more than happy to walk you through, and answer any questions that you have.

Hi Sueone,
There are a lot of nifty things on the journals and member pages. I think the more you play around with it, the more familiar you will get with how it works. Unfortunately, I haven't really done my online journal here as much as I would have liked to, since I'm more a pencil and paper type person and I have too many things to keep track of. It amazes me how some members really do a great and extensive job on their journals. I'm more the spread-the-books-and-journal-out-and-write-and-draw-and-plan-everything type person. Have fun :)

Hi Sue - welcome to DG :)

Take a look at my journal. http://davesgarden.com/gj/RiseAnn/index.html

First, click on the status that says "Growing Under Lights". You will notice that by assigning this status to each of these items (no matter what category - in this one I have entries from my herb category, perennial category and annual catagory) I can look at them as a group according to what I am doing with them.

The same applies with my status of "Winter Sowing Method". When I go outside to check on the plants, I can pull up that group and work with it without having to pull each plant individually and by specific rid numbers.

So, in summary, status is a way to group items from different categories to view them.

TODO is a handy automatic reminder for you, I use them to remember when to plant seed or you could use it to remember when to fertilize, prune shrubs, etc. If you find it does not apply to a specific entry under a category, just delete it.

The journal can be customized is so many ways, I created a specific status for reminders.

The best thing to do is play around, change, edit and try viewing by status, by category and by "view all items" Once you are viewing by one of these, you can sort by any header shown simply by clicking on it.

The status I use most frequently is "Not Yet Sown". Once viewing by this status I then sort by clicking on the header titled "Sow Date". Now I can instantly tell what seed is next to be sown from all categories. Try it!

Cool huh!
