Lily of the Valley plant (muguet) SOS please Northern NJ

Union City, NJ

Help! I have been unsucessfully been trying to grow the supposedly easy to grow plant lily of the valley (in my country it is called Muguet and is tradtionally given on May 1st of each year to show love, respect and good fortune). I have ordered from several sources, planted at different times the pips sent to me... no results! I cannot seem to find any plants with roots in any nurseries near me...yet I see this plant used as ground cover and growing easily in the area... i have new pips that just arrived today and some from Brecks that were supposed to arrive on March 29th but now they say are arriving in late April...would any would agree to help me understand what I need to do today to get live plants with blooms for May 1st? The ones I planted last May are dead. Thank you!!!

Dear KristenNEWgard,
Not trying to squash your hopes entirely, you should be aware that pips planted this time of year may not yield flowers for you. In addition, they generally take a minimum of a year to bear flowers after transplant. May I inquire about the site you are planting them in? What is the soil like, what sun exposure is it receiving, is it on a slope or a flat area, is the area wet or dry? These things will help determine the sustainability of your planting.

I am drawing from my own experience with a very old and well established bed of lily of the valley. They bloom later in May here in my zone 5 in Michigan, but likely will bloom earlier in your hardiness zone; maybe even May 1st! I will go out and have a look at mine to see if there is enough frost out of the ground to lift some for you, if you would be interested in that.

With best regard,

They also don't do well in hot sun. Grow like a weed in damp shade here
